One of the advantages of behind the ear hearing aids is that the small microphone is part of the unit, putting it at the same level as most sounds coming into the unit. With some of the older units, the microphone was often separated and made listening difficult as it could pick up unrelated sounds. About the only user maintenance required is to keep the ear-mold of behind the ear hearing aids cleaned to prevent feedback, which can be distracting to the user. Stuttering is not simply a speech difficulty but is a serious communication problem. For the child or adult who stammers it can undermine their confidence and self-esteem, and affect their interactions with others as well as their education and employment prospects.
