Studies proved that honey is a good antimicrobial and has a great number of applications for treating all sorts of diseases. It contains enzymes that produces hydrogen peroxide which is believed to be the main reason of its antimicrobial activity. According to research, honey does not only stops the growth of dental plaque bacteria but it also decreases the amount of acid it produce and stops the bacteria.
Honey has anti- inflammatory component that increases the possibility of its uses as therapeutic agent. Honey’s therapeutic content is evidently seen in caring wounds thus it potentially give a therapeutic use in the field of dentistry.
Although the potential effect of honey as a natural remedy for certain ailments such as gum diseases still needed to be further proven and studied we can still prevent gum disease by having a good oral health hygiene and taking good care of our health.
