Everyones familiar with the concept of a ‘conga line’, but, like most people, I did not know much about actual conga drums until this little jazz/mambo club opened up on the first floor of my building. I got to know one of the drummers pretty well because he was always hanging out in front. He would sit out there and jam on his conga drum, and all the neighborhood kids would show up and dance. I used to joke with him and call him ‘Desi Arnaz’ until he told me Desi Arnaz actually played a different drum, not a conga. I had to give him credit, he definitely knew his percussion.
